Captain, Shane Reid
Shane is originally from Knysna, South Africa, and has been in the yachting industry for over 15 years. Having worked aboard charter yachts, including the ever-popular 130' Westport ARIOSO and the 161' Trinity ANJILIS, Shane has taken charters as far south as Grenada through the Caribbean, the Bahamas, up to New England as far north as Nova Scotia as well as cruising the Mediterranean Sea. Prior to becoming a yachting professional, Shane was a Project Manager in the construction business in South Africa and the United Kingdom. Shane currently holds a 3000-ton MCA Master Class 4 license, and prides himself on running a professional operation creating a safe and fun environment for guests and crew alike. Shane's interests include surfing, kite surfing, traveling and enjoying various cuisines.
First Officer, Nate Cook
Originally from the Twin Cities of Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Nate grew up working and playing on the water. After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida with a Business Management degree, he decided to begin his career on super yachts. This combined his passion for traveling, working on the water, and interacting with people from other countries. After 5 years in the industry, Nate has been fortunate enough to work on yachts that travel all around the world, including islands in the South Pacific, Indonesia, Australia, S.E Asia, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and even the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway to Chicago. When not working, he enjoys scuba diving, road tripping on a Harley Davidson, hanging out with good friends, surfing a local break, or participating in trips to Kenya in support of his family's foundation. Nate looks forward to making your time on RHINO truly unforgettable!
Engineer, Ian Tough
Born in South Africa, Ian moved to the coastal town of Port Elizabeth at age 12 and fell in love with the ocean. Water sports, like scuba diving, skiing, underwater hockey and polo held more interest at high school than other mainstream sports. Conscripted to SA Navy Marine Corp for two years after school, Ian developed an interest in mechanical and marine engineering. Ian then attended University and graduated with an architectural degree, traveled, worked in Namibia and Europe, then returned to Port Elizabeth where he designed and built his own home. Ian skippered and won the Cape to Rio Yacht Race in 2000. He ended up in Charleston, SC where he discovered a way to make a living by sailing. 11 Atlantic and 2 Indian Ocean crossing later, he gave up being a captain, to enjoy the challenges of engineering.
Chef, Rachel Hargrove
Rachel is originally from Tampa, Florida and has traveled and studied extensively in order to perfect her craft—spending over a month in Thailand, Bangkok studying Thai cuisine, and over three months in Japan studying Edomae sushi & cuisine to apply to her knowledge of Macrobiotic lifestyles. Her broad abilities range from molecular gastronomy to homemade gluten free pasta, or even a simple Sunday roast. In between busy charter seasons, Rachel spends her time continuing her education either at the Culinary Institute of America or with internships like at the Michelin starred restaurant Quatro Passi in Nerano, Italy. Most recently she worked in Ohio at the Chef’s Garden for agricultural sustainability and nutrition. Aside from cooking, Rachel has a passion for wine, having completed 1st level of Sommelier under the tutelage of Virginia Philip, the third female Master Sommelier in the world.
Chief Stewardess, Sophie Wood
Sophie hails from Auckland, New Zealand where her love of the water started with sailing on her grandfather’s 36ft yacht. A love of exploring new places runs in the family, with Sophie’s parents taking her and her brother to many Pacific Islands, Australia, Singapore and Thailand at a young age, and then again to compete as a cross country and track runner throughout New Zealand and abroad. Sophie has a degree in Biology and a passion for land and animal conservation. The travel bug bit her in 2008 and she took off to Europe. After returning home to continue postgraduate studies her desire to travel still had not subsided, and upon hearing about the yachting industry she took off again to Europe to jump on a boat in 2010. She has been fortunate enough to cruise the waters of the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Bahamas, East Coast of the US, Atlantic and the Norwegian Fiords on yachts. Sophie is a firm believer that "everything happens for a reason" and joined Rhino in February 2017. Her competitive streak remains firmly intact and as such she will go the extra mile to ensure your stay on Rhino is unforgettable.
2nd Stewardess, Gillian Liszyk
Gillian comes to Rhino from Melbourne, Australia, where she spent over 6 years in the hospitality industry—largely working in restaurant management. Upon learning of the yachting industry Gillian clearly knew this was a career path she wanted to follow. With a passion for providing excellent service, and a vast interest in worldwide traveling and the great outdoors, yachting has become the perfect match for her. Gillian has now been in the yachting industry for 2 years. Her hobbies include, waterskiing, wakeboarding and horse riding.
Junior Stewardess, Katie Griffin
Katie grew up on Lake Norman in Mooresville, NC. From a young age she has always had a passion for the outdoors, water & water sports. Katie loves being out in the sun and has spent many summers at the beach and has done several fishing trips with her father. Katie has a knack for rising to new challenges. She was a waitress for many years and manager at a corporate restaurant. Katie's natural skills in event planning placed her as manager of "Princess Parties" where she organized themed parties for girls. Through her involvement in the luxury yachting industry Katie has found the perfect outlet for her passion for service, event planning, her love of the outdoors and worldwide travels. Katie is always looking for the next adventure and there is no doubt her captivating energy will fill your next charter holiday with smiles.
Bosun, Stefano Gadda
Stefano was born and raised in the yachting haven of tropical St. Maarten. A natural traveler “Stef’s” family moved to Toronto, Ontario where he spent the next 7 years completing high school and a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance, upon completion the sea called him back and he is now happily in the third year of his true calling. Stef is a scuba instructor and he enjoys kite boarding and hiking—including a recent hike up an active volcano in Tenerife! Stef’s infectious positive attitude and enthusiasm for the sea will make your next Rhino charter unforgettable.
Lead Deckhand, Holden Bailey
Holden is from North Carolina, spending summers at Wrightsville Beach and winters in Mooresville, north of Charlotte. He has been an avid offshore fisherman since a very young age. When he is not fishing, he is looking for a solid surf break. Holden played football through his high school years and had plans to continue playing in college. When an injury put an abrupt stop to his aspirations, he turned his sights to the water. He packed his things and headed to Florida where he found a position on RHINO. Holden is more than happy to assist you in any way to make your time onboard extraordinary!
Deckhand, Christopher James Newton
Chris grew up in Namibia and after completing school, he sailed from Cape Town to Tortola in 2013 on a 48’ Leopard catamaran thus discovering his love for the ocean. After spending time in Hartford, CT working in the lumber industry, Chris realized how much he missed the ocean and moved back to South Africa where he became a sailing instructor in Langebaan. Chris taught sailing for 2 years before returning to Namibia to accept a position as a charter skipper, later on moving to Fiji in order to complete his Dive Master rating. Chris is now a integral member of the Rhino crew. His hobbies include surfing, rock climbing, mountain biking and scuba diving.
